Château Chenonceau in Amboise

This Château, Château Chenonceau, is the grand daddy of Château's in the Loire part of France.  Of course, this was the only one we explored (we had 5 kids in tow, remember?)

For more info. go here:

Above is the view you get just walking up to the Château ... I love this little couple holding hands

Inside chapel in the Château

Downstairs in the kitchen - it reminds me of the old fashion kids toy kitchens.  This kitchen is huge and was purposely built in the basement in order to heat the rest of the château, and to be close to the water in case of a kitchen fire.

The side view

This Château is a 16th-c. Renaissance palace located over the Cher River.  I love the arches that were designed to go over the river.  In 1547 King Henry II gave the château to his mistress Diane de Poitiers.  Diane was the one who added the arched bridge across the river.  After Henry II died his wife, Catherine de Mèdicis, kicked her late husbands mistress out.  Catherine seriously hated Diane.  Catherine de Mèdicis added the 3-story structure on the arched bridge that Diane had built.  To listen to this audio guide was rather interesting, especially concerning these two women and their hatred for one another.
