The City of Bacharach and The Rhine River Cruise

We started our Rhine River Cruise in the City of Bacharach.  It was such a neat city to explore!!
Here is one of the original towers in the distance.

The Altes Haus
The first floor is made of stone ... The upper floors are made of timber
The windows of this building were so neat - if you look closely, you can see that they are small, flattened circles - it was all that they could do in the 14th century.

Protestant Church ... this picture is basically taken standing with the Altes Haus behind us.

I love the spiral staircase!

In the bottom left can you see all those little legs and bottoms?  Those are my kids looking into one of the wells of the town.  There are 40 wells in this town and they brought water to the town until 1900.

I seriously LOVE these side streets - there is so much character!!

We 'hiked', or more like strolled, up to a look-out point to capture a view of the entire city.
The top right side is where 13th century Burg Stahleck sits (it is now a hostel).  From this view we could almost see all of the original towers.

Now on the river cruising up the Rhine ... just a couple of the many castles to view.

The castles built here taxed/tolled the ships on the river.  When a ship passed a castle a toll had to be paid.  There were 10 custom stops in a 60 mile stretch between Mainz and Koblenz.  Germany had so many rulers and kingdoms!

a few more scenic castles

St. Goar with the Rheinfels Castle Ruins up on the hill.
